FAMILY PLANNING AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS
I believe each woman has to decide for herself how to deal with a pregnancy in consultation with her doctor and according to her own religious beliefs. The choice is hers and no one else’s.
In Congress I plan to defend a woman’s right to control her own body, including the right to abortion and contraception, and I recognize the vital role Planned Parenthood plays in delivering women’s health services.
As a nurse, I strongly believe in preventative care for all health related issues. I believe we can, and should, do a much better job of providing education and access to family planning and sex education, not just for women, but for men too. The prevention of unplanned pregnancies requires a full investment in women’s health programs.
I will also lead the fight against all forms of sexual harassment and abuse – in the workplace, in the home, and in the community.
The values that drew me to the Democratic party were because of the party positions on social justice and racial equality. As such, I do not believe in ANY form of discrimination, or withholding of services, government benefits, or employment against anyone on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other demographic identifier.
I support the right of gays and lesbians to marry and raise children. In this day and age, families come in all shapes and sizes. And at a time when too many families right here in our community are falling apart, I believe any couple that wants to nurture a child should be encouraged, not hindered.
